Energy Potential of Rice Straw in India and Assessment of Various Technologies Suitable for Its Efficient Energy Utilization

Abstract : Rice is largely grown crop in India which after harvesting leaves behind large amount of straw.The aim of this paper is to find out the energy potential of rice straw in India and study the different technologies for energy utilization from rice straw. Recent data of rice production in India is used and from literature its usage is defined. It is calculated that 122.6 MMt of rice straw is produced in India. Energy potential of surplus rice straw is estimated. Different technologies of energy utilization from biomass such as grate fired boiler, fluidized bed combustion boiler, gasification, cigar burning, pyrolysis are studied and among them best feasible is identified.
